Entry from: Hanoi, Vietnam Entry Title: "Capital City" Entry: "Hanoi is a busy city with pockets of faded French elegance. The city isn't quite experiencing the economic boom that Saigon is, but I think Hanoi is on its way there. I stayed in the Old Quarter part of town, which is a warren of small streets packed with shops, sidewalk vendors, restaurants, hotels, and travel agencies. I found the Old Quarter a bit too hectic. The sidewalks are all overcrowded with vendors and parked motorcycles, so pedestrians have to walk in the streets which are filled with speeding motorcycles. My hotel was nice though and had free Wi-Fi, which is always convenient. Hanoi offers some tasty eating. One of my favorites was a place called Baguette & Chocolat that served up the delicious cakes and sweets for cheap prices. The restaurant trains former street children in the hospitality business and donates profits to charity. There are lots of good cafes that serve up baguette sandwiches and that strong Vietnamese coffee. Beer Hoi or draft beer "bars" are setup all over Hanoi. They consist of small plastic chairs and maybe a table out on a sidewalk and 10 cent beer being served out of a questionable metal can. The beer is delivered fresh daily to these places from local breweries and the price is can't be beat. One annoying ...
